What to do in Cottage Country this Winter

“I’m not going outside, until the temperature is above my age”

Believe it or not, I actually prefer winter cottaging to summer cottaging… GASP – say it ain’t so?! It is “so” my friends, it is VERY so! Contrary to popular opinion, I find there to be so much MORE to do up North during the winter months in comparison to your quintessential hot “Cottage Season” that us Canucks have grown oh so very fond of – but  honestly, it was literally SO freakin’ hard to narrow the below list down to just 10 winter activities I swear to you! So I challenge you all to switch up your mindset just a little bit & embrace all that winter season up North at the cottage has to offer! You won’t regret it…  (more…)

Rustic Cottage Dinner Party

“The last time I cooked, hardly anyone got sick!”

ecards

If you happen to be a regular follower of this blog, I’m sure it’s quite obvious that I have an unhealthy penchant for all things Halloween; an obsession which I believe likley falls somewhere in the realm of “fetish”. Yep… it’s literally THAT intense. Each year, I host a Halloween Dinner Party that relies heavily on blood, gore & guts as its primary tablescape elements, so assembling today’s quaint & rustic cottage dinner setting was just a tad outside of my comfort zone to say the least! I mean, the two could NOT be further apart on the decor & dinner party spectrum. Nevertheless, I was totally up for the challenge & I HAVE to say that I completely nailed this one folks!  (more…)

Au Naturel Shower Favourite: Oneka

“Taking forever in the shower because you like to stand there… just thinkin’ about life”

Rebloggy

Showering at the cottage is somewhat of a foreign concept, & a mundane task such as bathing will likely only be reserved for high emergency situations. So high, in fact, that I cannot even think of a situation so dire that would warrant having to pull myself from any given cottage activity just to carry out such a non-essential task. I mean, why shower when I have this perfectly good glass of pinot in one hand & great book in the other? It’s only been six days laying out in the sweltering heat…. I’m sure I can fester in my own filth for just one  day longer. Ask any cottager…. I can one hundred percent guarantee that this is a legitimate thought that goes through their head. HOWEVER, when I DO shower up North, I like to utilize products that work to protect our fragile environments. (more…)

Canada Day Cottage Essentials

“If a Canadian falls in the forest & no one is around… does he/she still apologize?”

Pinterest

Ps. The answer is undoubtedly always yes. HAI there my fellow crazy Canucks! What are your plans to celebrate the big “150” this weekend? I personally plan on commemorating this special occasion by planting my pretty little keister in a Muskoka Chair lakeside, with a ceasar in one hand & a…. oh heck, who am I kidding – with a ceasar in the other one too… because obviously. Well, considering lakeside Northern escapes are kind of our jam here in the Great White North, I felt it apt to share a few of my favourite beach/dock/pool essentials – however I’ve tailored them slightly to accommodate Canada Day celebrations!!!! Enjoy, & have a happy Canada Day!!!!  (more…)

3 Cottage Appropriate Meals for Canada Day

“On behalf of all Canadians… SORRY for being so awesome all the time”

BuzzFeed

When you factor out black fly & mosquito season, I’d say summer for us Crazy Canucks culminates to a mere four good, “quality weekends“. So when Canada Day long weekend hits, I tend to reserve said weekends solely for trips up to the Great North – aside from when there is some form of mandatory, “super important” social function tying me to the city, like a wedding or shower of sorts…. Which is just the actual WORST – kidding, kidding – but if we’re actually being honest here, I’m really only half kidding because I take my cottage summer weekends VERY VERY seriously. Anywho – my nonsensical, long-winded intro is not for nothing, what I’m getting at here is that I know the “ins & outs” of all things cottage – not limited to “socially acceptable cottage mannerisms” so to speak. And seeing as how Canada Day officially, officially marks the start of cottages, camping & all things summer social, I thought it apt to discuss one of the more traditional & unspoken, yet totally mandatory, responsibilities of a cottage guest: prepping a meal for the weekend! I’m therefore sharing a few different, SIMPLE meal ideas one can bring up for a summer weekend getaway with friends… because it honestly is such an ART! (more…)
